The Rev. Dr. George H. Martin (Bexley Hall ’67) has brought years of research on the writings of St. Paul to life in his book Paul Found in His Letters (Claremont Press). Beginning with the premise that most scholars agree that of the thirteen letters ascribed to Paul seven were authentically written by him. Martin invites us to meet a Paul different from the account in Acts. With those seven letters at the heart of the book, Martin focuses on Paul’s journey from a position of privilege to a traveling apostle bring the message of the Risen Lord to the most marginalized and desperate people in the Roman Empire. And he lived alongside the same!

Martin also draws attention to the Paul who worked alongside of women as his co-workers. By calling himself a “slave of Christ” he invited slaves to see themselves with dignity and self-worth they were denied in the vertical hierarchical world of Rome. Engaging a broad array of scholars and abundant use of Greco-Roman sources, Martin illuminates Paul with new questions and fresh insights.

A retired Episcopal priest who also served as Pastor at a Lutheran church, Martin has served as interim at churches all over the country, although he has made his home in Minnesota for almost 50 years. He was an Adjunct Faculty at Seabury with the original Doctor of Ministry in Congregational Development program. The founder and executive director of what was first called The Episcopal Ad Project, and later was renamed The Church Ad Project, Martin has been deeply involved with evangelism and church plants.  Using the Contact’s tab at www.paulfound.org you can reach him. He loves to use Zoom for church forums and Bible study groups.
