We celebrate the Pentecost event this month on Sunday, May 24. The Holy Spirit dramatically alit on the sequestered apostles.
“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly … All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.” (Acts 2: 1,4-6)
In this formative event of The Church, boundaries of language dropped away, even as faithful people from many nations and cultures gathered together. From its beginning The Church has burst seams thought to hem it in.
God has always refused to have a fixed address; “the Most High does not dwell in houses made with human hands.” (Acts 7:48) And the Spirit has sent the People of God moving again and again.
“A wandering Aramean was my ancestor.” (Deuteronomy 26:5)
In quite a real way, that migrant spirit is part of Bexley Seabury. “Bexley Seabury is called to be a 21st century seminary beyond walls,” our vision statement recognizes. So in that, as in other ways, we are a Pentecost seminary.

“When you have finished paying all the tithe of your produce in the third year (which is the year of the tithe), giving it to the Levites, the aliens, the orphans, and the widows, so that they may eat their fill within your towns, then you shall say before the Lord your God: ‘I have removed the sacred portion from the house, and I have given it to the Levites, the resident aliens, the orphans, and the widows, in accordance with your entire commandment that you commanded me; I have neither transgressed nor forgotten any of your commandments.’” (Deuteronomy 26: 12)
